As we continue to work towards our return to live competition, negotiations and plans have been ongoing as to how we would proceed with Color Guard Championships for the 2022 season.
In 2020 (the season that was cancelled), there was a planned expansion of the Color Guard Championships event to include two days at Winthrop University and a second site for the Saturday competition. Changes in finances, membership, staffing, policies and more have made this expanded schedule more difficult for the upcoming season. As such, the Board has been hard at work to revisit our plans for the event and look for a new solution this year.
After we were notified in August that Winthrop Coliseum would be unavailable for the 2022 season due to planned construction and renovations, we were also forced to revisit our choice of venue. From a scheduling perspective, we also experienced unexpected conflicts with the WGI Regional Calendar due to changes in their dates. With the challenges we were facing, the Board went back to the drawing board and re-imagined the event from the ground up.
After extensive planning, we are excited to announce that Color Guard Championships will be expanding to a three-day event spanning two weekends! Our event will kick off on March 19, 2022 (Saturday) at James F. Byrnes HS in Duncan, SC for the Scholastic AAA and Scholastic AA Championships events. On Sunday (March 20), we will continue with the A, Open and World classes. Each of these events are expected to be full days with over 50 performances each. On March 26, 2022, we will move over to Catawba Ridge HS in Fort Mill, SC for the Novice, Cadet and Regional A Championships which marks our first event within this new facility.
While we all wish we could see our event return to Winthrop Coliseum this year, the planned construction makes that impossible. We are so grateful to have outstanding support from our event partners to host these events at Byrnes and Catawba Ridge this year and are looking forward to an exciting set of shows! Negotiations are already underway for the 2023 season for a potential return to the Coliseum, as are searches for alternative venues for future years.
